2. Study of the existing technologies for digitization of the sites envisaged by the project

New information and multimedia technologies have evolved over recent years to levels that allow new ways of preserving, maintaining, displaying and spreading the massive material of cultural and historical heritage. There is no strategy or unified concept in this area.

The aim of the first stage of the project is to make a thorough study and analysis of the state of modern technologies for digitization of the cultural historical heritage and analytical research of the development and applications of the modern technologies for construction of digital repositories and libraries with complex multimedia content, and architectures.

Analytical research covers the following main issues:

• Common concepts for digital repositories and libraries with complex multimedia content;

• formats, standards and principles for building digital libraries and storage media with complex multimedia content;

• Comp. architectures of digital libraries with complex multimedia content;

• Initiatives for the digitization of cultural and historical heritage;

• features in the construction of digital libraries and repositories of complex multimedia content to display and preserve the cultural and historical heritage, and in particular the three-dimensional documentation of unique objects, which is a relatively new field of activity.

In order to realize the potential of digital technologies for broad and easy access to information, three broad guidelines should be followed:

• • Online accessibility to materials - a condition that enables different types of users to make the most of the information at anytime and anywhere.

• • Digitalization of analogue collections so they can be more widely used by the information society.

• • Protection and storage that will provide future generations with access to digital content and will prevent the loss of valuable content

Various hardware and software technologies and methods of digitization will be considered and selected depending on the type of media: text, photo, video, audio.

Studies and analyzes of state of the art technologies.
